Greek authorities have condemned a new Turkish naval exercise (NAVTEX) in Cyprus waters as a provocative and unilateral act. The exercise, which took place in the eastern Mediterranean, was described by Athens as a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement accusing Turkey of conducting "illegal research" in areas claimed by Cyprus, emphasizing that such actions undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Greek government has consistently opposed Turkey’s expansion of its naval presence in the region, particularly in areas disputed by Cyprus. The latest exercise, which involved Turkish naval vessels operating in waters claimed by Cyprus, was seen as a further escalation of tensions. Greek officials warned that such actions could lead to increased military confrontation and destabilize the region.
This incident follows a series of similar Turkish naval exercises in the eastern Mediterranean, which have been met with strong criticism from Greece and Cyprus. The Greek government has called for a peaceful resolution and adherence to international law, stressing that any military activity in disputed waters must be conducted with the consent of all parties involved. The situation remains tense, with both sides maintaining their positions and continuing to engage in diplomatic discussions.
